• Spaulding convinced Wilson to apply for the job, and Wilson was accepted by Mr. Duncan
Rose, the league's head.

Wilson arrives at the office to find it closed and a notice on the door stating that the Red-
Headed League has been dissolved.
• Holmes promises to investigate, and Wilson leaves. As Spaulding opens the shop door,
Holmes notices that the legs of his trousers are dirty.
• Spaulding asks Holmes what he can do, and Holmes instructs him to go to the strand, using
